Home Pedicure

There's nothing like getting a pedicure at your favorite skin and nail salon or spa, but over time the cost can really add up. If you want to save money and have your feet pampered whenever you want, then consider do-it-yourself pedicures that you do right at home. With the right supplies, a few guidelines, and a little time, you can treat yourself with an amazing pedicure that's every bit as satisfying as when you go out for one. This article gives four steps for great foot and toe nail treatment you give yourself.

Start with a foot soak. I like to put a towel on the edge of the bathtub and sit on that with my feet in the warm water. You can also fill a plastic bucket or bin with water if you want to soak your feet somewhere other than the bathroom. Add some fresh peppermint and a spoonful of tea tree oil to the water to help get rid of any foul smelling bacteria. For a refreshing tingling feeling on your feet and to clean out the pores in your skin, put some Epsom salts and a little witch hazel in the water. Soak your feet for about ten to fifteen minutes.

With your skin softened nicely from the soak, it's time to exfoliate to remove any dead skin. You can buy exfoliating agents but if you are like me and want to make your own, combine some almond oil and granular sugar to make a paste. Apply this to your feet, especially on the heel and bottom of your toes. Massage and scrub for a few minutes then rinse.

Next, dry your feet and gently rub a pumice stone on any rough areas where you have calluses to smooth the skin. Be sure to apply light pressure so as to not tear the skin. Finish by applying some fragrant skin lotion all over and then wrap your feet in a towel for a few minutes putting slight pressure with your hands on the top and bottom of your feet.

Finally, turn your attention to your toe nails. Trim and file each nail, and clean up the cuticles so they look neat. If you want, finish your nails with polish, but be sure you remove any cream or lotion using nail polish remover. When your nails are dry, apply a color nail polish or go with a clear coat to make your nails shine.

Giving yourself a pedicure at home is not only easy but fun as well. If you are on your feet all day and in shoes a lot for work or play, it feels great to pamper yourself every so often with a complete foot treatment. You now know how easy it is to save time and money by doing it yourself at home. Do it regularly and you will be rewarded with great looking and great feeling feet.
